Thriving in Further Education: Supporting Mental Health in Young Adults

By: Jessica Parker

Navigating young adulthood can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially in Further Education settings where students face increasing academic, social, and personal pressures. Mental health plays a crucial role in their ability to thrive. This masterclass empowers educators with practical insights and strategies to create a supportive and resilient learning environment.

Masterclass Overview

Further Education (FE) settings are a unique and transformative environment for young adults, offering opportunities for growth and independence. However, this stage of life also presents significant challenges that can impact mental health. In this 90-minute webinar, we’ll explore the mental health needs of young adults, focusing on the transition from adolescence to adulthood and how FE staff can provide effective support.

Session Outcomes

By the end of this masterclass, participants will be able to:

  1. The Developing Teen Brain - Understand the ongoing development of the adolescent brain and how it affects emotions, decision-making, and behaviour in young adults.
  2. The Challenges of Young Adulthood - Explore the unique pressures faced by young people in FE settings, such as academic demands, independence, financial stress, and navigating future aspirations.
  3. Risk and Protective Factors - Identify the factors that increase vulnerability to mental health issues, as well as those that promote resilience and wellbeing in young adults.
  4. Recognising Warning Signs - Learn how to spot early indicators of mental health struggles, from emotional distress to disengagement or risky behaviours, and understand how to act.
  5. Practical Strategies for Support - Gain tools and techniques to foster a supportive FE environment, including how to open meaningful conversations, signpost to appropriate resources, and build trust with your students.
