Breaking Barriers: Supporting Young People with Emotional Barriers to Attendance (EBA)

Breaking Barriers: Supporting Young People with Emotional Barriers to Attendance (EBA)

By: Jessica Parker

Attending and engaging in education can be challenging for young people facing emotional barriers, often leading to disengagement and reduced achievement. This masterclass provides a valuable opportunity to understand the complexities behind these barriers and develop practical, compassionate approaches to support students. By fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment, educators can empower young people to overcome obstacles, build resilience, and re-engage with their education.

Masterclass Overview

Emotional Barriers to Attendance (EBA) are a significant challenge in Further Education (FE) settings, affecting students’ ability to engage, achieve, and thrive. In this comprehensive 3-hour session, we will equip you with the tools and knowledge to recognise the signs of EBA, implement practical strategies for support, and adopt a trauma-informed approach to foster a safe and inclusive environment for young people.

Session Outcome

By the end of this masterclass, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognise the Signs
    • Understand the key indicators that a student may be struggling with emotional barriers to attendance, including behavioural, emotional, and social cues.
    • Explore the root causes of EBA, such as anxiety, family challenges, trauma, or social pressures, and how they manifest in FE settings.
  2. Apply Practical Strategies for Effective Support
    • Learn actionable techniques to engage students experiencing EBA and encourage a gradual return to attendance.
    • Discover ways to build trust and communication with students, enabling them to feel heard and supported.

  3. Adopt a Trauma-Informed Approach
