Helping Children Reconnect with School: Overcoming Emotional Barriers (EBSA)

Helping Children Reconnect with School: Overcoming Emotional Barriers (EBSA)

By: Jessica Parker

School should be a place where every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn. However, for some children, overwhelming anxiety makes attending school an immense challenge. Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is becoming increasingly common, leaving schools, families, and pupils searching for effective solutions. Addressing EBSA requires a sensitive, informed, and structured approach—one that prioritises early intervention, emotional wellbeing, and collaboration between educators and families.

This masterclass offers an opportunity for primary school staff to develop confidence in recognising and responding to EBSA. By focusing on practical strategies, real-life case studies, and trauma-informed techniques, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to create a supportive school environment where every child has the chance to thrive.

Masterclass Overview

Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is a growing concern in primary schools, with children experiencing high levels of anxiety that prevent them from attending school. Early intervention is key to reducing long-term absence and ensuring children feel safe and supported in their school environment.

This half-day masterclass provides primary school staff with a clear understanding of EBSA, including its causes, early warning signs, and the role of the school in preventing and responding to school avoidance. Through practical strategies and case studies, participants will explore ways to build trust, reduce anxiety, and support pupils and families in a compassionate and structured way.

 Learning Outcomes

By the end of this masterclass, participants will:

  1. Understand EBSA – Recognise the signs, causes, and impact of EBSA in primary-aged children.
  2. Identify Early Intervention Strategies – Learn how to spot early warning signs and implement preventative approaches.
  3. Support a Successful Return – Develop practical, trauma-informed strategies to reduce anxiety and help children reintegrate into school.
