Managing Compassion Fatigue and Secondary Trauma in Education Settings

By: Jessica Parker

This 3-hour masterclass, designed specifically for professionals in emotionally demanding educational roles such as Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) and Senior Mental Health Leads, provides a crucial exploration of compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, and emotional burnout. Working with children and young people who have experienced trauma, attachment issues, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can take a significant emotional toll. This masterclass offers a safe and supportive space to understand these challenges and develop practical strategies for self-care and resilience.

Masterclass Objectives:

This intensive session will equip participants with the knowledge and tools to:

  • Understand the Emotional Landscape: Delve into the complex emotional impact of working with traumatised children and young people. This includes understanding the neurobiological effects of trauma on both the child and the professional, exploring the dynamics of vicarious trauma, and differentiating between compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout. We will examine how witnessing and hearing about traumatic experiences can affect professionals' mental and emotional well-being.
  • Recognise the Warning Signs: Learn to identify the subtle and more overt signs of compassion fatigue and burnout in themselves and their colleagues. This includes exploring the physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioural indicators, such as changes in sleep patterns, irritability, difficulty concentrating, cynicism, and withdrawal. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and identify potential triggers.
  • Develop Practical Resilience Strategies: Explore a range of practical strategies and coping mechanisms to build resilience and protect their own mental health. This will include:
    • Mindfulness and Self-Care Techniques: Learning practical mindfulness exercises, relaxation techniques, and other self-care strategies to manage stress and regulate emotions.
    • Boundary Setting: Developing effective strategies for setting and maintaining healthy boundaries with students, colleagues, and within their personal lives to prevent emotional overwhelm.
    • Support Systems: Identifying and utilising existing support systems within the school and wider community, including supervision, peer support groups, and professional counselling. The masterclass will also explore how to create a supportive environment within the school setting.
    • Reflective Practice: Developing skills in reflective practice to process challenging experiences and learn from them, promoting emotional regulation and preventing emotional build-up.
    • Advocacy and Systemic Change: Understanding the importance of advocating for systemic changes within the school to promote staff wellbeing and create a trauma-informed environment.

Expected Outcomes:

By the end of this masterclass, participants will not only have a deeper understanding of the challenges related to compassion fatigue and secondary trauma but will also feel empowered and equipped with practical strategies to continue supporting their students effectively while safeguarding their own well-being. They will leave with a personalised action plan for implementing self-care strategies and accessing support, contributing to a more sustainable and compassionate educational environment.
